Church and School of the Holy Name, c. 1911, Copy of a Postcard
Church and School of the Holy Name, 96th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
This is a copy of a postcard from about 1911, showing the church before the steeple was added-- and featuring an amusing misprint.

A History of Woman's Hospital New York, New York by Alvarene Molland RNMA
Woman's Hospital, founded 1855, merged in 1965 with St Luke's Hospital a few blocks north, which is now known as Mount Sinai Morningside.
This short history was written by Alvarene Molland, RNMA, Clinical Coordinator Nursing in 1965, upon the occasion of Woman's Hospital merging with St Luke's Hospital. This is her 1992 revision, with an addendum upon the occasion of moving the inpatient services of Woman's Hospital to "New Roosevelt Hospital" on 59th Street in Manhattan. The author's views on J. Marion Sims may be out of step with prevailing views of the 2020s. As Woman's Hospital was one of several pioneering medical institutions to make its home in the Bloomingdale area, and as not much is readily available online about its history, this short introduction is clearly of value.

History of the Bloomingdale Branch of the New York Public Library, by Susan Singer
The history of the Bloomingdale Branch of the New York Public Library.
These are librarian Susan Singer's notes for a talk she gave to the Park West Neighborhood History Group, later renamed Bloomingdale Neighborhood History Group. Though Ms. Singer has first-hand knowledge of the branch's history, having worked there for many years, she chose to focus on her research of the early precursors of the NYPL system, as well as the early history of the Bloomingdale branch, particularly as reflected in the annual reports of Ms. Emily McCormick, up to the year 1961, when the branch moved into its current building, after which Ms. McCormick retired. Ms Singer's notes are fascinating, detailed, beautifully written, and will be of wider interest because much of the history of the area is reflected in the library's history.

Report of Committee on Church History Appointed by the Board of Trustees December 22nd 1932 [First Church of Christ, Scientist, 96th Street and Central Park West, New York City]
The first 50 years or so of the history of Christian Science in New York City, especially the establishment of the First Church and its magnificent building on 96th Street and Central Park West designed by Carrere and Hastings and dedicated in 1903, as well as its founder Augusta Stetson, up to 1909.
The Bloomingdale Neighborhood History Group was given a xerox copy of this report for our files in the Bloomingdale Branch of the New York Public Library on the occasion of a tour of the building on October 25, 2003, before the building was sold and the congregation combined with the Second Church of Christ, Scientist, in its building on 68th Street. The first part is a typewritten overview of the history interspersed with some photographs; the second part is a collection of photographs, and the third part is handwritten excerpts from the early minutes of the church's meetings.

The West 104th Street Community Garden and the history of community gardening in New York City
These are Jean Jaworek's notes for a visit to the West 104th Street Community Garden (between Central Park West and Manhattan Avenue), which she led for the Bloomingdale Neighborhood History Group on September 19, 2010. Although she didn't write down her entire talk, her notes contain a substantial amount of information on the history of community gardening in NYC.

This is a scan of the front page of the February 1977 issue of the 'Heights & 'Valley News, a publication of the Columbia Tenants' Union. This page is in the Bloomingdale Neighborhood History Group's file on the history of the Bloomingdale branch of the New York Public Library, but it could be filed in so many other categories equally well. It is also an interesting example of local periodicals that no longer exist.

Taken From Harper's Weekly, May 9, 1885: The New York Cancer Hospital
The founding of the New York Cancer Hospital, which through a series of mergers has become Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and whose building has since become the Towers Nursing Home and later a residential condo.
This is a scan of the typescript copy of the Harper's Weekly article we have in the Bloomingdale Neighborhood History Group's history files. A digital copy of the original article may be found through the New York Public Library, but the size of the pages is so large and the print so small, that this article is actually more legible in this typescript version.

Bloomingdale Conservation Project articles
The Bloomingdale Conservation Project, 1959-1964
In the Bloomingdale Neighborhood History Group's files, we have a red folder of newspaper clippings about the Bloomingdale Conservation Project, created by Ginger Lief. Most of the clippings are from the New York Times, and those articles are fairly easy to find online through the New York Times's Archives (see links below). There are also a few articles from what seem to be local papers no longer in existence, which we have scanned for you and posted here. The Bloomingdale Conservation Project was a counterpoint to the "urban renewal" projects which had just razed a large swath of the Upper West Side. It was an effort to improve conditions between 96th Street and 104th Street west of Amsterdam Avenue without tearing down the buildings and removing the residents.
The Morningsider and the "WSN." Bruce R. Buckley is one author. We hope to learn more about the publications and will update this entry if we do.
